Rich in architecture from all periods in its history, Spoleto enjoys an active tourism business thanks also to the legacy of its annual Festival dei Due Mondi.
This music festival is held in late June and early July and was founded by the Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti in 1957.
It brings together artists from Europe and the Americas and has turned into the best music, drama and ballet festival in Italy.
The graceful cathedral, destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa, was rebuilt in 1198. Filippo Lippi, painter of the sensuous frescoes on the Life of the Virgin in the sanctuary, is buried in the right hand transept.
