Capital of the Region of Umbria, it is situated on a hill overlooking the Tiber River, not far from Lake Trasimeno.
Perugia is an important cultural center, lively and cosmopolitan, with a large student population attending either the state University, the University for Foreigners, or the Accademia delle Belle Arti. Corso Vannucci, its wide main street lined with smart shops and cafés, leads up to the cathedral in front of which stands the elegant Fontana Maggiore, dating from 1277.
