Situated 605 meters above sea level on a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana, Montepulciano is the birthplace of the great Renaissance poet and humanist Angelo Ambrogini, known as il Poliziano.
Its winding streets are lined with a blend of Florentine and Sienese styles of architecture. Just outside the town, lies the church of Madonna di San Biagio, a masterpiece of Renaissance classicism, built by Antonio di Sangallo in 1518.
