Situated at 472 m above sea level, Montefalco dates back to the 12th century as it gradually developed around a castle. It has remained practically intact over the centuries, and is considered a true jewel of the medieval era.
The artistic highlight of the town is the St. Francis fresco cycle painted by the Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli between 1450 and 1452, and housed in the museum of San Francesco. Montefalco is also famous for its full-bodies red wines, such as the Sagrantino.
