Cortona is a delightful town, ringed by substantial remains of Etruscan walls and boasting two good museums.
  Its streets are steep and its main square is dominated by the great tower of the 13th-century Palazzo Comunale.
A few streets off this square is a row of early medieval brick and timber houses with jettied upper storeys;  only a handful of these structures have survived in all of Italy.
