Città della Pieve is a small town in southwestern Umbria in the province of Perugia, located on a hill 508 meters above sea level, from where one can see Lake Trasimeno, in the valley between the river Nestore and the Valdichiana.
The town is none other than the ancient Castrum Plebis of Medieval times, of which it still retains practically intact the original burg, incorporated into the possessions of the Church by Martin V, and given the name of Castel della Pieve by Clement VIII. It is noted for being the birthplace of the painter Perugino, and a number of his works (the most famous being the Adoration of the Magi) can be seen in the Oratorio of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, in the Duomo and in the churches of Santa Maria dei Servi and of San Pietro. |
