The city is principally known for being the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, and its Basilica di San Francesco is its greatest monument. Giotto’s frescoes, completed in 1300, depict the life of the saint with 28 scenes that tell the story of Francis’s path to sainthood. The main square, the Piazza del Comune, occupies the site of the Roman Forum. Remains of the Roman basilica can be seen in the Museo Romano in the crypt of San Nicolo church. The medieval Palazzo dei Priori is still used as the town hall. The Rocca Maggiore, on whose site Frederick Barbarossa built a castle in 1174, commands superb views over the Tescio valley and the Vale of Spoleto.
